Why Young Chinese Are So Crazy About Online Sticker Sets

为什么中国年轻人对表情包情有独钟?

It is probably no exaggeration to say that, these days, anyone who uses the internet on their phone understands the formidable power of a deftly deployed cat GIF, a knowingly dropped “crying with laughter” smiley, or a casually placed icon of a minuscule rose, watermelon, or cup of coffee. Today's world is one in which the emoji reigns supremely.

可以毫不夸张地说,如今,任何用手机上网的人都知道一个熟练发出的小猫动图、一张故意留下的“哭笑不得”的笑脸,或是随便加的小玫瑰、西瓜、咖啡的巨大影响力。当今世界是一个被emoji表情主宰的世界。

Emoji” is a Japanese word meaning “pictograph”, composed of the Japanese characters E, meaning “picture,” and moji, meaning “written character.” In Japan, it was originally referred to the ideograms and smiles used on mobile phones in the late 1990s. Since Apple added emojis to an iPhone update in 2011, they have taken the world by storm. One could say that, in the Internet era, emojis are the world's most widely understood language.

emoji”是一个日语单词,意思是“象形文字”,日文汉字e代表“图片”,moji的意思是“文字”。在日本,emoji原指上世纪90年代末在手机上使用的表意符号和微笑符号。自2011年苹果公司在iPhone中添加了emoji表情更新后,这些表情符号就开始在全世界风靡。可以说,在互联网时代,emoji表情是全球最通用的语言。

What China's youths need now is more channels of self-expression. We must allow them to speak more freely and independently, so that their unique subcultures may challenge mainstream culture and make mainstream values more “light-hearted”, diverse, and tolerant. For the moment, at least, sticker sets are playing this critical role.
   中国年轻人现在正需要更多表达自我的渠道,我们必须让他们更加自由独立地表达,这样年轻人独特的亚文化才可能挑战主流文化,使得主流价值观更加轻松、多元、包容。至少,目前表情包正发挥这个关键作用。

A New Set of Chinese-English Edition Of the Four Classics of Chinese Literature Was

Recently Published

全新英汉对照版中国四大名著近日发行

A new set of Chinese-English edition of the four classics of Chinese literature was recently published by a Shanghai publishing company after ten years of persistent efforts, which was reported on thepaper.cn on Sept. 5th.

据澎湃新闻95日报道,在经过10年的不懈努力后,上海一家出版社最近出版了整套汉英对照版的中国四大名著。

The four classics of Chinese literature are finished in the Ming and Qing dynasties, around half a century ago, and include The Story of the Stone, The Three Kingdoms, The Journey to the West, and The Marshes of Mount Liang.

四大名著分别为《红楼梦》、《三国演义》、《西游记》、《水浒传》,完成于半个世纪前的明清时期。

The new edition published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press thrilled the public, as many world renowned translators had devoted themselves to the project.

这套上海外语教育出版社出版的、由许多全球知名译者参与打磨的汉英对照新版本,让公众为之惊叹。

The Marshes of Mount Liang translated by John and Alex Deng-Young was first published in 2011, followed by The Story of the Stone translated by British sinologists David Hawks and John Minford, and The Journey to the West was translated by Anthony C. Yu, a scholar of literature at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the University of Chicago.

由约翰.登特.杨和亚历克斯.登特.杨父子二人翻译的《水浒传》最先于2011年出版,随后出版的是英国汉学家大卫.霍克思、约翰.闵福德完成的《红楼梦》,以及由美国芝加哥大学艺术与科学学院院士余国藩翻译的《西游记》。

The Three Kingdoms, translated by Chinese professor Yu Sumei, was the last one of the series to be translated, but it is the first English version by a Chinese translator, and his fellows have spoken highly of it.

由中国的虞苏美教授翻译的《三国演义》是这一套里最后出版的,这是首个由中国译者完成的译本,受到了其他译者的高度评价。

Professor Cha Mingjian, who is from the Shanghai International Studies University, say that Yu’s translation is faithful to the original and more acceptable for Western readers, and can be compared to the Homer’s Epic in the English world.

上海交通大学的查明建教授认为虞苏美的译文既忠实于原著,又注重西方英语读者的可接受性,可媲美西方世界的《荷马史诗》。

Sometimes Giving up is not Necessarily a Bad Thing

有时候,放弃不一定是一件坏事

When you spare no effort but you fail, when you try your best but you don’t get the result you want, give up and start all over again. Throw the ticklish matter away and run away as fast as you can.

当你竭尽全力还是没有成功的时候,当你付出所有努力还是没有得到想要结果的时候,放弃吧,然后从头再来!扔掉这块烫手山芋,以你最快的速度逃离它。

Do you feel confused? However, what is wrong with giving up ?

感到困惑吗?放弃又有什么错呢?

Yes, we have ever been trained to strive to achieve our dreams, which was a good thing.

Baffled? What is wrong with giving up?

是的,我们都曾经被教导要努力才能实现我们的梦想,那是一件好事。

The problem emerges when these inspirational quotes confuse us.

Oh yes, we all have been trained and conditioned to work hard to achieve our dreams, and that is a good thing.

但是当这些励志名言把我们弄糊涂的时候,问题就出现了。

These quotes tell people not to give up, but not tell them that the quotes just apply to your real dreams.

The problem arises when all these inspirational quotes start confusing us.

这些名言告诉人们不要放弃,但是却并没有告诉你那只适用于你真正的梦想。

They show that people should try and try again till they succeed, but those efforts belong to what you really want in life and what you determine not to quit whatever your life’s purposes are.

These messages tell people not to give up, but they don't tell you that it should only apply to your true dreams.

它们告诉人们要一次又一次地尝试直到成功,但是那样的努力应该只用来得到你人生中最想得到的东西、以及无论人生目标是什么也决定不会放弃的东西。

Try to recognize your talent, ability and skills. Find out what you are good at, what makes you happy and work on it.

They tell one to "try and try again" until they succeed, but that amount of effort should only be put toward what you really want in life and one should never quit at what they think to be their life's purpose.

试着找出你的才能、你的能力和你的技能。找出你擅长的东西、使你快乐的东西,然后从事那方面的工作。

Don’t worry about what people say or think. It’s your life and you must live up to it, and you should become your life’s winner.

Try to recognize your talent, your ability and your skills. Find out what you are good at, what makes you happy and then work on it.

If you do, no one would have to tell you or inspire you to not give up because when you love something, you keep trying until you get it right and the enthusiasm flows from within.

不要担心人们会说什么或想什么,这是你自己的生活,你必须活下去,你必须成为自己的主宰。

说明:有时候, 放弃其实并不一定是一件坏事!
