Abstract
The responses of many engineering systems vary over time. It is desirable to account for their reliability with time-dependent reliability methodologies. These methodologies, however, are much than complicated than the traditional static reliability methodologies. There are two major challenges. First, time-dependent reliability analysis is computationally intensive and requires a large number of deterministic analyses. Second, the accuracy of the current time-dependent reliability methodologies are relatively low and may result in over-conservative designs. In this talk, a new time-dependent reliability analysis method is presented. The method improves the accuracy of the popular upcrossing rate method by using joint upcrossing rates.
As a clean source of energy, hydrokinetic systems produce renewable electricity by harnessing the kinetic energy of a body of water. The performance of a hydrokinetic turbine is time dependent, and its reliability is critical for its production and cost of energy. The new time-dependent reliability methodology has been applied to the analysis and design of such a system. The results are promising. New research directions are derived from the results.
